What is the purpose of using the rotary evaporator?


Rotary evaporator is a common laboratory equipment to remove solvent from a mixture of compounds, the simple configuration of rotavapor is motor, evaporation flask, heating bath (water bath / oil bath), condenser, collection flask, etc.

The simple structure and working principle of rotary evaporator


The evaporation flask is an eggplant or round bottom flask with a standard ground joint , which is connected with the vacuum pump through a highly reflux serpentine condenser,Another opening of the condenser is connected to the collection flask with a grinding mouth for receiving the evaporated organic solvent.


There is a three-way piston between the condenser and the vacuum pump. When the rotary evaporator is communicated with the atmosphere, the evaporation flask and collection flask can be removed and the solvent can be transferred. When the rota evaporator is connected with the vacuum pump, the evaporator is in a reduced pressure state.

When rotary evaporator in use, please turn on the vacuum pump firstly to reduce pressure, then start the motor to rotate the evaporation flask. When your experiment is completed, please stop the rotary evaporator firstly and then ventilate it, to prevent the evaporation flask be falling off during rotation.

As the heat source of distillation, rotary evaporator is often equipped with a constant temperature water heating bath (oil bath is optional). Through electronic control, the flask is rotated at a constant speed to increase the evaporation area within the rotating speed range which is allowed by the rotary evaporator.

The rotary evaporator is in a negative pressure state by connecting with vacuum pump. The evaporation flask is heated in a water bath at a constant temperature while rotating, and the solution in the flask is heated, diffused and evaporated under negative pressure.

The rotary evaporator can seal and reduce pressure to 400-600 MMHG. The solvent in the evaporation flask is heated with a heating bath. The heating temperature can be close to the boiling point of the solvent, at the same time, rotating the evaporation flask, the rotating speed could keep at 50-160rpm/min, make the solvent being thin film, increase evaporation area. In addition, under the effect of efficient condenser, the hot steam can be rapidly liquefied to speed up the evaporation.
